Lizzie pulled harder at Ciel's arm, nearly cutting off the circulation. "Cielllll," she protested, in that whine that made his teeth hurt. "He must be freezing up there without a blanket! Why didn't you give him one?"

Ciel sighed. "Sebastian's fine, he doesn't need one."

Her expression went from pleading to shock to reproval in 0.25 seconds flat. "Of course he needs one! It's so cold out here, and he's a person, too! Why would you say such a horrible thing??"

Ciel cringed at her tone; it was going to be a huge hassle to calm her down if she really got going. "Don't worry about it, Lizzie, the cold doesn't bother him, I promise!"

"Ci-elllll! Just because he's a servant doesn't mean you can just leave him be in freezing weather! What if he gets ill?" She squeezed his bicep so hard he thought she might actually amputate the limb then and there. "Sebastian is so nice, and you're being so meeeeeeaaaann!" She turned away, her face crumpled in despair.

Sensing impending doom, the Earl reached out to her, his visible eye wide. "No, wait, Lizzie, I--"

Up in the driver's seat, a slow smile spread across Sebastian's face. Compassionate hysteria, followed by the young master's immediate acquiescence in five... four... three... two...

Lizzie let out a howl of anguish. "I have to- to m-marry youuuu," she wailed, the waterworks going full blast. "Are you g-going to be so unkind to P-Paula, too-ooo-ooo? You're terribllllle...!"

"All right, all right! But where are we going to get another lap blanket without going back inside?"

She turned to face him again, beaming like a ray of sunshine, the tears having somehow magically vanished. "I have a spare in the carriage! Let's go and get it, Ciel!"

He sighed, defeated. "Sebastian," he called, over the jingling of the bells on the horse's harness.

The demon turned his head slightly, so the wind would carry his voice over his shoulder and back to his passengers. "Yes, Young Master?"

"Turn the sleigh around and head back to the courtyard - Lizzie wants to retrieve something from her carriage."

"Certainly."

Five minutes later, she was pushing a thick blanket of heavy wool into the butler's hands, her eyes huge and luminous and so full of kindness he very nearly laughed, but he managed to smother the urge. "Here, Sebastian - use this lap blanket to keep warm, okay?"

He glanced at Ciel, who gave him a short, stiff nod and immediately looked away. "Thank you, Lady Elizabeth. How thoughtful and generous of you to concern yourself with a servant such as myself. I'm truly honored."

"Never you mind!" she beamed, so brightly that he wanted to shield his eyes. She leaned closer, gesturing for him to do likewise, and when he bent down to her, she cupped her hand beside her mouth and murmured in a conspiratorial tone: "And don't be afraid to tell Ciel when he's being mean, okay? He's not bad at all, really, he's actually very sweet! He just overlooks things sometimes, so just remind him you're a human being, too, and I'm sure he'll be much nicer!"

It took every bit of the devil's self-control not to burst out laughing. "I will keep that in mind. Thank you very much for your wise advice."

He helped her back into the sleigh's passenger seat, pointedly ignoring Ciel's suspicious glare, and tucked the blanket around her with a friendly, professional smile; after he'd climbed back up into the driver's seat and had spread his newly-acquired blanket over his legs, he snapped the reins, clicking his tongue to get the horse moving again.

"There, you see, Ciel? He's so much happier now!" Lizzie resumed her rose-vine clinging position at her fiance's elbow, hugging his arm with fierce joy.

Ciel wondered how the deuce she thought Sebastian looked any happier, since they were still staring at his back and his expression wasn't visible - then again, the blanket she'd lent him was bright pink with a floral rose border and a picture of a kitten with a bow around its neck in the center, so the idiotic cat-fanatic probably was rather pleased with it. "Uh... right." Now he can tease me the rest of the week about being 'sooooo meeeeeeean' to him, that's what he's happy about, as well as your ridiculous blanket. Damn it, Elizabeth!

From then on, the Earl swore to himself, he would see to it that there were matching lap blankets for both seats in the sleigh, neither of them adorned with pictures of cats.
this fic was actually a comment i left on Winter Pleasures by :iconsweetlittlevampire:.

:iconsessinara: mentioned that Sebastian wouldn't need a lap blanket, but i figured it would seem odd to onlookers if he were sitting up there without one when every other driver in London would be bundled up against the cold - and poor sweet Lizzie would worry so much about him getting sick!

and so this random comment-fic was born.

go love on the art/artist that inspired it! :D
